This has become a premier peoples event showcasing the Missouri River Valley. The potential dollars brought into Kansas City, KS and the communities along the way in addition to the future economic boost for tourism make this a marketers dream. The best part is it didn't cost the taxpayers a dime. The Coast Guard should be pleased with this recreational use of the river, something the state of Missouri has been promoting. Their most important job is to keep out of the way and let Mansker and co. do their thing.

The Coast Guard has been a pleasure to work with the past couple of years.  Very supportive of the event.  This is due to the fact that we've done well with safety and cooperation with the barge industry.  Adding Missouri River Relief to the team has helped so much because of their good relationship with the barge industry and their ability to supply us with safety boats and people to pilot them.

Also, we've had safe paddlers who look after themselves AND eachother.  I think some falsely assume that there will always be a safety boat hovering around you.  Those of you who have done the race know this is not the case.  You can go hours and hours without seeing a safety boat.  You really have to rely on yourself and your fellow paddlers.  We're grateful to you guys for keeping yourselves safe.

We have been granted the 250 slots, assuming we can get the requisite safety boats out there.  I think we can.  We're almost there.  I'm targeting divisions like women's solo (our largest group ever) and the tandem and team divisions so that we can get the most people out there possible.

Hello, my name is Michael Smith.  I am a reporter from the Columbia Missourian and I am planning on writing a preview for the MR 340 for Friday's paper.  If anyone would be interested in talking to me about the race post a reply and let me know I would really appreciate it.  Any one from the Boone County area in Misssouri would be good too.

Thank you,

Smiley Just a quick note. Tom Ronk of Jefferson City will be on radio KWOS (950 AM) or streaming at www.kwos.com at app. 8:15 AM Thursday July 30. He is one of 6 paddlers on a unique canoe of the Chinook Indians out west.  Good luck Tom I hope you finish and survive. Your story is interesting. However, I see you have no Texans paddling with you-- and the Missouri River is not the Columbia or the Yellowstone!

Mike:
You should talk with Scott Mansker the race director.  Then, there are a number mid-Missouri participants.  I'd start with Bryan Hopkins and James Kaufman.  All three are regular readers/posters to this forum.  Scott can direct you to others, I'm sure.

SmileyTom Ronk's interview went well this AM, and perhaps generated some interest for locals to come down to Noren Access around lunch time on Wednesday, August 5  when that Chinook 6 man canoe will be hopefully passing by. If they come earlier in the day they can also see the race leaders and perhaps Bryan Hopkins and other JC entrants. Bryan is of course an experienced "iron man" in paddling in the MR340.

Hello Mike,
I'm sure your Friday deadline is past due but I thought I'd throw this you way. My wife was going to be our support crew for my son and me, but her mother fell gravely ill on Tuesday and is in ICU.  My other son who lives in Columbia likely (hopefully) will take her place.  It certianly puts the race in another perspective for us, as we will not be as focused as before.

Smiley The team division entry "Aquaholics" was on local television (KRCG in Jefferson City) last evening. They were paddling in their missing man formation for the camera.  You can see it at: http://www.connectmidmissouri.com/news/news_story.aspx?id=331232

This may be my last 340 for a time....until my son is old enough for a father-son run.

I accepted an appointment to the Director of the State Soil and Water Program and my life is about to change.  Trust me, I will still race the "shorter" marathon races....but the big dance is simply too much time and specific training focus for what I need to focus on for next year.  The program is one of the premere soil and water conservation programs in the nation and provides support to agriculture to improve stewardship of the land and our rivers and streams...............I am blessed to be given this opportuntiy and the JC staff and district offices are all excellent people...I look forward to being part of the program...............anyway...this has changed my mindset for this race in a major way.....this will be my time to push......not gonna be looking for ways to improve  for next year, etc....this is it....now or never.

Hey Bryan- congrats on the new job. I was planning on hanging it up after this year's 340 also- but for me it's just getting too old. I'm getting mostly tired of all the time and expense just to get ready. I'm considering going back to Downriver racing- more adrenalin, less trouble and I can race in an age group! (By then I'll be in "Most Venerated Masters" age group.
Maybe we can do a tandem sweep run next year. A 340 where you can stop and get some beer, wine, burgers, etc. sounds more appealing to me nowadays!

Scott, When do you think you will have the first roster list up on the MR340 sight?  Or is there some other place that I can find out for sure that we are registered?  Tahiti Paddler
