The Missouri River Communities Network was formed in 1994 to help reconnect river communities to the natural heritage of the Missouri River. They have had many successful projects since then – river awareness festivals, the first ever Missouri River cleanup, advocacy in government councils, Lewis & Clark event planning, educational programs, water quality projects, river history documentation, public forums and community coordination just to name a few. Their goal is to work with river communities in a way that grows their economy, provides jobs, protects natural resources, sustains cultural heritage, and improves quality of life. This year they are helping to promote the MR 340, sponsoring the statewide Stream Team AmeriCorps Project with 12 members in 6 communities working on clean water activities, developing a new Katy Trail brochure, and promoting the Missouri River Heritage Tourism Initiative, a project to market the Missouri River Heritage Corridor as a recreational tourist destination.
